Referee Training in Solitude: Building the future of Ski Mountaineering

From 3 to 5 December Solitude, Utah transformed into a hub of learning and preparation as the ISMF hosted its Referee Training Course. Over several days, candidates immersed themselves in both theoretical sessions and on-snow workshops designed to sharpen their knowledge of ISMF rules, race organization, and the demanding responsibilities that come with officiating at the highest level of competition.

The program blended theory and practice: from understanding the structure of ISMF events to hands-on work on race tracks, start and finish areas, and transitions. Participants also joined in the preparation of the World Cup course, gaining invaluable experience alongside seasoned officials. The training culminated with practical involvement during the Solitude World Cup weekend, where referees assisted in Sprint and Mixed Relay races under the guidance of the ISMF Jury.

Most importantly, the course concluded with the certification of new referees who successfully completed the program. ISMF proudly welcomes:

  • Jerimy Arnold (USA)
  • Mark Cihlar (USA)
  • Kevin Duniho (USA)
  • Benoit Simard (CAN)
  • Robert James Henry (CAN)
  • Carlos Herraez Barroso (ESP)
Their dedication and passion for the sport will strengthen the officiating community and help shape the future of Ski Mountaineering competitions.
