Cancún, Mexico – 18 October 2025
The International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF) concluded its 2025 Plenary Assembly in Cancún (MEX) approving a set of measures to strengthen governance and protect all participants across the sport.
Delegates from 21 National Members approved a comprehensive package of governance reforms, including the ISMF Integrity Code, Safeguarding Rules, Conflict of Interest Policy, and Disciplinary Rules. These instruments form part of a wider governance modernisation process launched in 2024 to strengthen transparency, accountability, and good practice across all areas of ISMF activity. Together, they establish clear standards of conduct, outline procedures for case management, and define responsibilities for all stakeholders.
ISMF President Regula Meier said:
“With these reforms, we are strengthening the foundations of our sport. They reflect our shared belief that performance and integrity must go hand in hand. As we approach our Olympic debut at Milano Cortina 2026, these steps position ski mountaineering to grow with credibility and confidence.”
The Assembly also approved the 2025/26 budget, confirming a balanced financial outlook and continued investment in key strategic priorities.
A defining moment of the session was the admission of six new Full Members:
- Lebanese Ski & Biathlon Federation
- United Federation of Georgian Mountaineers
- Qatar Winter Sports Committee
- Winter Sports Federation Pakistan
- Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing of Uzbekistan
- Royal Moroccan Ski and Mountain Sports Federation
Additionally, the Winter Sports Unlimited Club of Mongolia was approved as a Provisional Member.
ISMF General Secretary Jordi Canals said:
“Welcoming these new members marks an important evolution for our sport. Each new federation brings unique experience and energy to our community, helping us strengthen our foundations and expand opportunities for athletes worldwide.”
The Assembly confirmed Zakopane, Poland, as host of the 2026 ISMF Plenary Assembly, marking a return to one of Europe’s leading mountain regions.
Elections were held to renew several positions across ISMF’s governing bodies. Anders Pettersson (BRA) was re-elected to the ISMF Council, while Jerimy Arnold (USA) was confirmed following his appointment as President of the North American Council. Maxim Soldatkin (RUS) was re-elected to the Ethics and Compliance Office.
The Plenary Assembly was preceded by the National Member Workshop, held on Friday 17 October, which provided a platform for dialogue and exchange on key strategic priorities. The session covered a wide range of topics including the implementation of the new integrity framework and broader governance reform programme; ongoing development initiatives, including those supported through Olympic Solidarity; and the launch of the new ISMF Media Hub, offering direct access to photo and video assets for athletes and National Members. Updates were also presented by the Audit Committee, including the approval of a balanced 2025/26 budget and confirmation of a surplus for 2024/25.
The workshop further reviewed progress towards Milano Cortina 2026 and engagement with future hosts, alongside updates on referee development and event delivery. The day concluded with a Council Candidates Round Table, allowing members to engage directly with candidates ahead of the elections.
ISMF General Director Ramone Cooper said:
“The workshop has become an essential part of our governance calendar. It gives National Members the opportunity to explore topics in depth before decisions are made, ensuring that our policies are grounded in practical experience and shared understanding.”
The Plenary Assembly also served as a platform to welcome two new commercial partners.
Pelliot, represented by Mr. Le Zhao, Vice President, was presented as the Exclusive Apparel Partner of the ISMF. In a video message, Mr. Zhao highlighted the partnership’s focus on innovation, sustainability, and athlete visibility—reflecting shared values and a long-term vision for collaboration.
Azerbaijan Tourism, represented by Ms. Gunel Badalova, Director of Communications & Events, was introduced as a new Strategic Partner, strengthening the ISMF’s goal to expand ski mountaineering into new regions. Azerbaijan has emerged as a dynamic partner, having successfully hosted its first ISMF World Cup in Shahdag in 2025 and with the partnership set to grow with the 2026 European Championships and ISMF World Cup, followed by the 2027 ISMF World Championships. The sustained investment highlights the long-term commitment to developing ski mountaineering and positioning the Caucasus as a new hub for ski mountaineering’s international calendar.
