Caroline Ulrich’s journey in ski mountaineering began as soon as she could stand on skis, growing up in a family passionate about ski touring. From early childhood, she learned to climb before enjoying the downhill, developing a love for the mountains that would shape her life.
Her competitive drive was sparked by her siblings and early running competitions, even though she didn’t initially enjoy the pressure of racing. When her brother started dreaming of joining the national skimo team, Caroline followed suit, finding motivation and camaraderie in a regional training center with other young athletes. Over time, what began as a family tradition and obligation blossomed into a true passion for the sport.
Caroline’s career has been marked by both triumph and resilience. Highlights include her second elite career victory in Schladming, as well as countless successes throughout her youth. Yet her journey hasn’t been without personal challenges: she lost her father in 2016 and her older brother, Mathias, a mountain guide, in 2021. These losses brought moments of doubt, but also strengthened her resolve to continue competing in their memory and to live fully, embracing the sport with dedication and joy. Injuries and setbacks along the way have tested her, but they pale compared to the lessons life has taught her.
A typical training day starts between 7–8 a.m., with breakfast followed by morning skiing, lunch, a short nap, and time for administrative or other tasks, sometimes capped by a second training session. Mentally, Caroline works to keep perspective, focusing on effort, presence, and enjoying the moment.
Outside of the mountains, Caroline is fascinated by nature and birds, and she has a playful, adventurous side—especially when a challenging downhill presents itself. Her hobbies and passions keep her grounded and enrich her life beyond competition.
For the upcoming season, Caroline’s goal is to bring her 200% to the field and become the best version of herself. Through her journey, she hopes to inspire others to take risks, live boldly, and rise stronger after life’s setbacks.
Caroline shares a heartfelt note to her supporters: “Thank you for your encouragement—it means more than words can express.”
