Today marked the first day of competition at the ISMF European Championships in Shahdag, with athletes competing in the Sprint discipline.
A strong international field was present across the youth categories. In the U18 division, there were 7 women and 12 men competing, while the U20 category featured 7 women and 11 men. Athletes from 13 nations were represented in both the U18 and U20 classes, highlighting the diversity and competitive depth of the championships.
Weather conditions added an extra challenge to the opening day. The races were held under cloudy and cold conditions, with intermittent fog causing reduced visibility in certain sections of the course. Despite this, the competitions delivered exciting performances across all categories.
Sprint Track
The sprint track was set at the Stadium Ski Alpine Resort, offering a dynamic and physically demanding course designed to challenge the athletes’ technical and endurance capacities.
The first 150 metres begin on a slightly flat section, allowing competitors to build speed before entering the initial climb. The first part of the ascent is relatively moderate, followed by a steeper second section. Athletes then navigate right and left turns into a very steep segment, with gradients exceeding 30 degrees.
The course continues into a demanding foot section reaching approximately 40 degrees, one of the most challenging parts of the track. After this, athletes arrive at the second transition zone. From there, around 80 metres remain before the final transition, on a comparatively flatter section with gradients between 20 and 25 degrees.
The downhill section opens with a steep 40-degree pitch over the first 50 metres, including several gates before entering the camel bumps zone, leading into the finish line. Last section required athletes to skate to maintain speed and efficiency.
